Shiara looked up at the man standing in front of her. She could not see him as a prince. There was nothing about him that screamed “royal family” to her.

“That doesn't make sense.” She shook her head, even as she denied it. “You don't look anything like a prince.”

Of course, she happened to look behind him just then — and realized that the two men behind him were not passing by or waiting for something specific.

Had they been there all the time? How did I miss noticing them before?

The answer was obvious. They were trained to be unnoticed . . . in the background . . . part of the background.

The truth began to sink in then. He was a prince. The evidence had been there all this time; she simply hadn't noticed it.

He had bodyguards — men who followed him everywhere he went. They had been with him every time they'd walked in the park together. She had probably seen them every time.

She just hadn't known who they were.

That day in the marketplace — when I first bumped into him. They must have been there, too. What must they have thought? I'm probably lucky they didn't think I did it on purpose.

All this time — I've been spending time with the Prince. All the things she had said over the last few weeks came crashing back to her — criticizing the government; his family.

What must he have thought of me?

Why did he continue to spend time with me? I was insulting his family.

On the heels of that thought, came the hurt.

Is that why he didn't tell me?

“Why didn't you tell me?”

He stepped forward again and took both her hands in his.

“It's not what you're thinking, I can promise you that.”

She stepped away, but even though she wanted to jerk her hands away, she didn't — so she settled for putting a little distance between them. “How can you possibly know what I'm thinking?”

“I can see the worry in your eyes. I can only presume you're worried that I didn't tell you because of who you are . . . or because of why I was spending time with you.”

“Well, it only makes sense. Why else would the Prince . . .” She broke off when she realized how her words sounded, knowing it would not be a good idea to accuse him — even if it were true.

“That is not why I didn't tell you.” He stepped closer again to her and leaned in a little.

She nearly jumped when his forehead touched hers, but there was something in the gesture that made her feel secure . . . almost as if it were a sign of surrender.

“I like how I feel when I'm with you. I feel normal — like an ordinary man. I didn't want to ruin that.”

“But you lied to me.”

“I did not intend to.”

The fact that he didn't argue the point — or deny it — made her feel a little better. As did his tone when he spoke .
